Waiting for the Wind
by Y. Dan Rubinstein
A contemplative song about patience and finding peace in stillness, inspired by wingfoiling on Donner Lake when the wind was scarce.
Lyrics
**Verse 1**
No wind on the water, I'm drifting slow
Mountains defiant, devoid of snow
The sun is burning, the sky is wide
But the lake is cool as I plunge inside
Chorus
And I don't mind just floating here
The water's deep and crystal clear
Fresh from the melt, so bright and blue
I'll wait for the wind to carry me back to you
**Verse 2**
Just a hint of ripples, soft and low
Time moves different when you let it go
Barely moving, my wing is still
my heart is yearning, and always will
Chorus
And I don't mind just floating here
The water's deep and crystal clear
Fresh from the melt, so bright and blue
I'll wait for the wind to carry me back to you
**Bridge**
The mountains breathe, the tall pines sway
I rise on foil and sail away
And just as soon as I turn to jibe
A stillness settles as the wind dies
Chorus
And I don't mind just floating here
The water's deep and crystal clear
Fresh from the melt, so bright and blue
I'll wait for the wind to carry me back to you
**Outro**
Yeah I'll wait for the wind
I'll wait for the wind
To carry me home…
To you.
Inspiration & Story
"Waiting for the Wind" was born from my first wingfoiling trip to Donner Lake in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. There was very little wind that day - most of my session had no wind at all. Occasionally, there would be a strong gust, usually just as I was about to decide to call it a day, and instead I'd give it another go and make it out to the middle of the lake, only to have the wind die down and have to float and swim back to shore.
This experience of patience and finding peace in stillness inspired the song. It's about learning to be content in the moment, even when things aren't going as planned. The lyrics reflect the meditative quality of floating on crystal clear mountain water, surrounded by the beauty of the Sierra Nevada, while waiting for the conditions to change.
The song captures that feeling of surrender to the elements, of finding beauty in the waiting, and of the deep connection between human spirit and natural world. It's a reminder that sometimes the most profound experiences come not from the action, but from the quiet moments in between.
